I guess it's time again...

So, I've been hanging out at OCS and Military sites and I have to say that I've learned a lot in the past 2 months. Mostly, I've learned about waiting. There's lots of it. We even have to wait to find out how long we'll be waiting. Next, I learned that "sea tour" does not equal 2 years on a ship. Silly me, I know. Apparently there are these things called "bases" where people live. I'm not really sure what I thought, but I was pretty sure that Jeff was going to be living on a ship during the whole tour. So that eased my concerns quite a bit. Then, I've been finding out about all of the little perks. Navy Lodges! Cheap air fair! Tax Free shopping! Free housing! I'm warming up to the idea of the Navy, and I have to say that I am a little excited about Jeff being a man in a uniform. I'll survive the 3 months of OCS (and hopefully he will too). Well, here I go, to wait some more. I'll update again when Jeff hears for sure and has a date.

Jen;

There is much to learn, and the good news is the Navy has a habit of writing it all down somewhere.

For each "community" or "designator," there is some sort of "career planning guide." Someone in the local organization should have one. For us Surface types, it's generally anout 6 months of indoc schools, 3 years sea duty (divisin officer), 2 years ashore, 6 months Dept Head School, then two back-to-back 18 month tours as a sea going Dept Head, then ashore two years (time to get that advanced degree!), then off to an XO ride for 14-18 months, then 2-3 years ashore, and back to sea as a CO. After that it gets squishy, as you maneuver for the final approach to try to make Flag rank.

Sea duty is time assigned to a designated sea going unit. I got 10 months of sea time in my record while assigned as Engineer to a ship in the shipyard for a complex overhaul. On a sea going staff (sea duty), I made a full deployment (6 months), and part of another, having been extended to 25 months on an 18 month tour. On the other hand, I had "shore duty" with a training team, and in 3 years, racked up almost 2 years riding ships all over the east coast.

Have him ask a lot of questions. I'm sure they will hand him the manuals/guides, of tell him who to call to get the right answer...
